What Is ChatGPT? Plans, Pricing & Models (2026)

Table of Contents

Short answer: ChatGPT is an AI assistant made by OpenAI. You talk to it in plain language and it can write, code, analyse data, search the web, generate images, and take actions on your behalf. It is free to start and available on the web, iOS, and Android — with paid plans that unlock more capable models and higher usage limits.

This guide covers everything you actually need to know: what ChatGPT is, how it works, how to log in, what each plan includes (verified directly from openai.com), which models are available, and — for WordPress users — how to connect ChatGPT directly to your WordPress site so it can take real actions there.

What Is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a conversational AI product built by OpenAI, a San Francisco-based AI research company founded in 2015. OpenAI’s mission is to develop artificial general intelligence that is safe and beneficial. ChatGPT is OpenAI’s flagship consumer product — the public-facing interface that lets anyone have a conversation with their large language models.

ChatGPT is commonly understood to stand for Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer. The “GPT” part describes the model architecture underneath: a transformer neural network trained on large amounts of text data and then fine-tuned with human feedback to follow instructions and have natural conversations.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT publicly in November 2022. It reached one million users in five days — faster than any consumer internet product before it. By 2026, it has become the dominant general-purpose AI assistant globally, with more than 900 million weekly active users.

What Can ChatGPT Do?

ChatGPT is not a simple search engine. It is an interactive AI that can reason, generate content, write code, and use tools on your behalf. Here is what it handles in practice:

Writing and editing — drafting emails, blog posts, marketing copy, proposals, scripts, social media content. It follows your style guidelines, matches your tone, and can rewrite existing text.

Coding — writing, debugging, and explaining code across all major languages. The integrated Codex feature extends this to full software engineering tasks running in cloud environments.

Research and analysis — searching the web in real time, summarising documents, analysing uploaded spreadsheets, and answering factual questions with citations.

Image generation — creating images from text prompts directly inside the chat window.

Voice and video — talking to ChatGPT with your voice and, on paid plans, sharing your camera or screen for live, visual conversations.

Agent tasks — on paid plans, ChatGPT can browse the web, fill forms, operate computer interfaces, and complete multi-step tasks without you supervising every step. This is the “agent mode” capability.

Memory — ChatGPT can remember facts about you across conversations so you don’t re-explain context every session.

ChatGPT Plans (Verified June 2026)

OpenAI currently offers six plan tiers for ChatGPT. All pricing is verified directly from openai.com/chatgpt/pricing/.

PlanPriceWho It’s For
Free$0/monthAnyone — limited access to models and features
Go$8/monthLight users who want more than the free tier
Plus$20/monthIndividuals who need advanced models and full features
ProFrom $100/monthPower users who need maximum usage and top-tier models
Business$20/user/month billed annually; $25/user/month billed monthly (2+ users)Teams and small businesses
EnterpriseCustom pricingLarge organisations requiring enterprise security and controls

What each plan includes

Free gives you access to GPT-5.5 Instant (with limits), basic image generation, voice, search, memory, canvas, and study mode. Usage is capped and slower during peak hours.

Go ($8/month) expands the message and upload limits, adds voice with video, longer memory, and more image creation. Note: this plan may include ads.

Plus ($20/month) is the most popular paid tier for individuals. It adds advanced reasoning via GPT-5.5 Thinking, expanded deep research, agent mode, tasks (scheduled actions), Developer Mode (beta), interactive tables and charts, and early access to new features.

Pro (from $100/month) provides 5x or 20x more usage than Plus, access to GPT-5.5 Pro (the most capable model), maximum Codex tasks, unlimited GPT-5.3 access, maximum deep research and agent mode, and the research preview of new features (ChatGPT Pulse is Pro-exclusive as of this writing).

Business ($20/user/month billed annually; $25/user/month billed monthly, minimum 2 users) includes everything in Plus plus a dedicated workspace, company knowledge bases, admin console, SAML SSO, MFA, no training on your data, and SOC 2 Type 2 compliance. A separate Business Codex plan is also available on usage-based (pay-as-you-go) pricing for development-focused teams.

Enterprise (custom pricing, contact sales) adds the full enterprise security stack: SCIM, enterprise key management, role-based access controls, data residency in 10 regions, IP allowlisting, a connector registry, 24/7 priority support, and custom legal terms.

ChatGPT Models (Verified June 2026)

OpenAI’s model names and capabilities change frequently. The following is verified from openai.com/chatgpt/pricing/ as of June 2026:

ModelAvailable on
GPT-5.5 InstantFree (limited), Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise
GPT-5 Thinking MiniFree, Go, Plus (expanded), Pro, Business, Enterprise
GPT-5.5 ThinkingPlus (expanded), Pro, Business, Enterprise
GPT-5.5 ProPro (also available on Business/Enterprise via flexible pricing)

Context window sizes vary by plan. GPT-5.5 Instant on the Free plan has a 27K total context window; Plus/Go get 54K; Pro and Enterprise get 128K. The reasoning models (GPT-5.5 Thinking) offer expanded context too — up to 256K on Go and Plus, and up to 400K on Pro.

ChatGPT also provides access to legacy models on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans for compatibility with older workflows.

Key Features Worth Knowing

Projects — available on all plans, Projects let you organise conversations, give ChatGPT persistent context about a task, and work collaboratively on Business plans.

Custom GPTs — reusable AI configurations with custom instructions, knowledge, and tools. Free and Go users can discover and use GPTs; Go and above can create and share them.

Deep research — ChatGPT’s long-running research mode that searches the web extensively and produces detailed, cited reports. Available to all plans (limited on Free and Go, full on Plus and above).

Codex — an AI software engineer that can run multi-step coding tasks in a sandboxed cloud environment. Limited on Free/Go, full on Plus, expanded on Pro.

Developer Mode (beta) — available on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise. This is where MCP and external tool connectors become available (more on this below).

Memory — ChatGPT remembers facts across sessions. Limited on Free, expanded on paid plans. “Memory with past chats” (which lets ChatGPT search your conversation history) is available on Free through Pro; it is listed as “coming soon” for Business and Enterprise.

Privacy and Data

By default on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, OpenAI may use your conversations to improve its models, but you can opt out in Settings. Business and Enterprise plans default to no training on your data. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.2) and at rest (AES-256).

If data privacy is a concern, go to Settings → Data Controls and disable “Improve the model for everyone.” On Business or Enterprise, this is off by default.

ChatGPT and MCP: Connecting to WordPress

This is where ChatGPT becomes genuinely powerful for WordPress site owners.

ChatGPT supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — the open standard that lets AI assistants connect to external tools and take real actions through natural language. (If you’re new to MCP, read our complete MCP guide for context.) MCP support in ChatGPT is available through Developer Mode (beta), which is included on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans.

Easy MCP AI (free, open-source WordPress plugin) is one of the 16 AI clients it officially supports. With Easy MCP AI installed on your WordPress site, you can connect ChatGPT directly to your WordPress backend. ChatGPT then has access to 214 tools — 96 core WordPress tools (posts, pages, media, menus, users, taxonomies, comments, blocks, site settings, themes, custom post types), plus plugin integrations:

  • WooCommerce — 46 tools
  • BuddyPress — 10 tools
  • The Events Calendar — 10 tools
  • Advanced Custom Fields — 6 tools
  • Yoast SEO, Rank Math, AIOSEO — 3, 3, and 2 tools respectively
  • Google Analytics, Search Console, SEMrush, DataForSEO — 38 data integration tools combined

Setup takes under five minutes:

  1. Install Easy MCP AI from the WordPress plugin directory.
  2. Enable the plugin integrations you want under Easy MCP AI → Plugins.
  3. Copy your MCP server URL from Easy MCP AI → Dashboard.
  4. In ChatGPT Developer Mode, add it as a custom connector and complete the OAuth 2.1 authentication.

Once connected, you can run prompts like these directly in ChatGPT:

  • “List my 5 most recent WordPress posts and summarise any that are missing a meta description.”
  • “Find all WooCommerce orders placed in the last 7 days with a status of ‘processing’ and list them.”
  • “Pull this month’s data from Google Analytics and write a brief traffic summary.”
  • “Create a new draft blog post titled ‘Summer Sale Guide’ with the Yoast focus keyword set to ‘summer sale 2026’.”

These are not suggestions — they are live tool calls executed against your actual WordPress site, with you in control of what gets approved. Easy MCP AI uses AES-256-GCM encryption with HKDF-derived keys, OAuth 2.1 one-click connect, per-tool permission scoping, and WordPress capability checks. Everything runs on your own server; no data leaves your infrastructure.
